The professional journey of Alejandro
Betancourt MD is one marked by dedication, perseverance, and a commitment to
excellence. From his beginnings in Puerto Rico to becoming a leading
neurosurgeon in Texas, Dr. Betancourt’s career is a testament to his  passion
for medicine and his desire to make a difference in the lives of his patients. 

Alejandro Betancourt MD began his medical
career in Puerto Rico, where he attended the Ponce School of Medicine. It was
here that Dr. Betancourt developed a strong foundation in the medical sciences
and nurtured hi s interest in neurosurgery. The rigorous training and education
he received at Ponce prepared him for the challenges of a neurosurgical career
and instilled in him a deep sense of responsibility toward his patients. 

After completing his medical degree,
Alejandro Betancourt MD pursued further training through an internship and
residency in neurosurgery at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine.
This period was crucial in honing his surgical skills  and deepening his
understanding of complex neurological conditions. Under the mentorship of
experienced neurosurgeons, Dr. Betancourt gained hands-on experience in
diagnosing and treating a wide range of brain and spine disorders. His time in
residency also reinforced his commitment to providing the highest standard of
care to his patients. 

Following his residency, Alejandro Betancourt
MD decided to bring his expertise to Texas, where he saw an opportunity to make
a significant impact in the Rio Grande Valley. In 2001, he co-founded the
Harlingen Spine & Neurosurgical Institute, now known as RGV Spine &
Neurosurgical Institute. This practice was groundbreaking for the region, providing
advanced neurosurgical care that was previous ly unavailable locally. Dr.
Betancourt’s decision to establish his practice in Texas was driven by his
desire to serve a community in need and to reduce the burden on families who
would otherwise have to travel long distances for specialized care. 

Throughout his career in Texas, Alejandro
Betancourt MD has continued to expand his expertise and contribute to the field
of neurosurgery. He has been involved in clinical research , including his role
as a surgeon and investigator in the CREST-2 trial, which aims to improve
treatment for carotid artery disease. Dr. Betancourt’s research efforts have
been complemented by his commitment to mentoring the next generation of
neurosurgeons as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Rio
Grande Valley College of Health Affairs.
